Velvet was a popular fabric choice on the AW2010 runways as seen above at Rochas, Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy. I've always had somewhat of a love/hate relationship with velvet myself because, on the one hand, it is soft and feminine which I love, but on the other hand, if not styled properly, it just screams old lady or Renaissance fair to me. For instance, the silk blouse and velvet skirt above by Rochas appeals to me, but the Jean Paul Gaultier velvet jumpsuit above is a bit much. I think the key to wearing this trend is to choose a velvet item in a modern cut like the velvet leggings or mini skirt below or, if you choose a more traditional velvet piece, like a velvet blazer, to pair it with modern pieces and accessories like skinny jeans and over-the-knee-boots. If you are daring enough to give this trend a try, below are some options to consider: ASOS Premium cowl neck velvet dress for $84.25 on www.asos.com; House of Dagmar velvet jacket for $269 on www.urbanoutfitters.com; Evil Twin velvet drape vest for $77 on www.shopbop.com; Plush private coat for $248 on www.anthropologie.com; Alice + Olivia "Juliana" velvet and leather dress for $440 on www.shopbop.com; Rebecca Minkoff 3-zip rocker bag for $138 on www.shopbop.com; Sparkle & Fade rouched velvet legging for $38 on www.urbanoutfitters.com; ASOS one-shoulder velvet dress for $60.66 on www.asos.com; House of Harlow 1960 "Baron" velvet flats for $148 on www.shopbop.com; MinkPink crushed velvet maxi skirt for $92.68 on www.asos.com; Oasis one-shoulder velvet dress for $126.38 on www.asos.com; Pa:nuu velvet leggings for $50.55 on www.asos.com; Velvet knit skirt for $13.80 on www.forever21.com; Juicy Couture schoolgirl velvet blazer for $228 on www.shopbop.com; Oasis velvet dress for $92.68 on www.asos.com.

This fall it is time to think outside of the box when you are layering up to keep warm. Traditional outwear items like coats and jackets are no longer your only option. Rather, as seen above at Matthew Williamson, Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein, and 3.1 Phillip Lim, non-traditional outwear items such as capes, ponchos, and vests are all on-trend options this fall and winter. Conceptually, I like this trend because it is new and different, but practically I just can't see myself wearing anything other than a coat or jacket during the brisk C-bus fall and winter months. Perhaps if I lived in a milder climate I would feel differently! However, if you are liking this trend and think it could work for your lifestyle, check out these options below: ASOS hooded military cape for $117.95 on www.asos.com; Alice + Olivia "Emory" embellished shoulder cape for $495 on www.shopbop.com; ASOS "Intarsia" pattern cape for $47.18 on www.asos.com; Aqua hooded cocoon cape for $148 on www.bloomingdales.com; Twisted Heart faux fur trimmed vest for $180 on www.saks.com; Lauren by Ralph Lauren military wrap for $150 on www.macys.com; Max Studio tie-front cape coat for $378 on www.maxstudio.com; INC faux sherling vest for $89 on www.macys.com; Dolce Vita "Darryl" poncho for $220 on www.shopbop.com; Juicy Couture knit military cape for $378 on www.saks.com; Craftsmanship capelet for $118 on www.anthropologie.com; Spiegel caped tweed coat on sale for $129 on www.spiegel.com; Calvin Klein long belted faux fur vest for $149 on www.bloomingdales.com; Charter Club vest for $69 on www.macys.com; Cooperative wool capelet coat for $138 on www.urbanoutfitters.com; "Everything in Place" cape for $198 on www.anthropologie.com.
